Utagawa Toyokuni (歌川豊國), was born in Edo, the son of Kurahashi (倉橋) Gorobei, a carver of dolls and puppets (including kabuki figures). While a teenager, Toyokuni became a pupil of Utagawa Toyoharu (1735-1814).
